Originally part of the Rancho San Dieguito land grant, in 1906 the Santa Fe Railway purchased the entire land to plant eucalyptus trees for railroad ties. The Covenant of Rancho Santa Fe also has access to a riding club, garden club, community center, art guild, library guild, book club, and 50 miles of horse trails which weave throughout the rolling hills of the community. The centerpiece of the Covenant is The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe designed by eco-conscious, early 20th-century American architect Lilian Rice. The focal point of activity in the Covenant is the Village, where businesses, shops and restaurants dot the few blocks of commercially zoned property.

Today, Rancho Santa Fe has a population of about 3,100 in a variety of subdivisions with a median home cost of $1,598,100 and a 2012 home appreciation rate of 2.26%. Rancho Santa Fe is primarily residential with homes set back from the roads that wind around the town. Rancho Santa Fe has several top-notch public and private schools.
